Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

I am a beginner. Will I be taught the basics to make my art piece?
Yes. We teach the fundamentals to all new students and approach each student individually.

What is the class structure at the Art Studio Academy?
In each class, we make sure each student learns something new. As every student is different, our approach is individual. For example, some students are already familiar with measuring proportions.  When we see that, we make sure to teach them something new. Our teaching is structured by level. To move to the next level, a student must already know what is covered in the previous. For example: 1st level consists of understanding proportions, gradation and finding shapes in objects, etc. When a student learned all important elements in one level, they can move to the next.

We also encourage students to bring their own projects and ideas to class, but they must be approved by the teacher to make sure they are appropriate for the student. Making something too challenging may be discouraging and making an art piece that is too easy does not help a student progress.

Do you offer a trial class?
We do not offer trial classes, because we believe that it is important to finish at least one work of art in class before deciding to continue. It usually takes students 2 to 3 classes to complete one piece depending on the project and student's pace. We do not rush students, since it will be new to them during their first class.  We do not focus on how many pieces students make but on how much they have learned.
We noticed that signing up for a month gives students enough time to get the feel for the class in order to decide whether to continue. Additionally, every spot is reserved for each student in class making it difficult to have drop ins. For these reasons, at least one month registration is required (4-5 classes depending on the month). We do not require a commitment longer than 1 month.

May I pay tuition and register for the class on our first day when we are there instead of online?
We require emergency contact information and the enrollment number prior to class, so the teacher knows who to expect. This also saves teachers' time in the beginning of the class so their attention can be focused on the students and preparing for class. Additionally, this prevents no shows and empty spots or classes that are too big. When you register and submit your tuition, your spot is saved for you or your child and no one else can take it.

What if I/my son or daughter needs to miss more than one class within a month?
You can miss one class without any worries per month. You can make it up. Usually students do not need to miss more than a week. If you do need to miss more than one class, no problem. You can make it up during any classes with available spots.

We do not require more than a month of commitment, so a student is welcome to take a month off for vacation. Additionally, we do not have regular classes during summer only camps. When a student registers for a month, his or her spot is reserved and that does not permit other students to take that spot. Make up policy is important to keep the classes full without multiple of empty spots.

You can also switch to a new class time anytime.

My child is 11 years old and would like to start in the advanced class will this be okay?
It is always best to start in the regular class if a student is 12 years or younger. In the advanced class, a student might not feel competitive enough in comparison to students that have taken art classes for a long time and that may be quite a bit older. It's always best to start in a regular class and then move to advanced to feel a sense of accomplishment instead the other way around. Students can change classes at any time as long as we have spots available.

Would I be able to observe a class to get a feel if it would be a good fit for me before I register for classes?
We do not allow drop ins or observations of the class, because it becomes a disturbance to the class. Plus, some students rather not have people watching while they make art. It makes them uncomfortable. However, we offer one time classes for adults.

We also noticed that signing up for a month gives students enough time to get the feel for the class in order to decide whether to continue.  Your options are below:

Sign up for one adult art class.

Register for a month of classes here.

Specify your preferred class time in the comment area. As soon as your tuition is received, your class spot will be reserved.

My child has been in camp for 3 hours and did not finish even one painting.  Should I be concerned?
During camps, we focus on classical art projects for 1.5 to 2 hours each day of the camp and spend the rest of the time exploring art in other ways. It is overwhelming for students to draw or paint for the whole consecutive 3 to 6 hours which may cause them to lose interest in art. It is always good to take breaks to reset. We include a variety of other activities besides painting and drawing. Mystery box helps the students imagine and understand an object through touch and in 3D. Character design encourages students to be more creative and make a story in their mind starting with a character. Art history helps students see what other artists made before and how artists help us record history and bring innovation to the world. Group projects help students work in collaboration with others. Sculpture helps students understand that art can be made from a variety of materials and helps them work in 3D (art can be made from anything), and it's important to do the best with what we have. Every project is placed intentionally within our curriculum to help students grow, become more creative and more open minded artists. Most students do not finish a project in one day. Sometimes students take 3 to 5 days. It takes time to learn and to create great art. We do not focus on how many pieces students make but on how much they have learned.
